Polish elites from the Middle Ages to the present day as a social network based on family ties – how it is reconstructed and what can be done with it
Maria Jadwiga Minakowska
For 25 years, I have been reconstructing the network of family ties among the Polish elite, understood as the top 1–2% of society with the highest economic, social and cultural capital (as defined by Pierre Bourdieu). The currently published network includes approximately 1.2 million people connected in one large social network, where the edges are genealogical relationships of filiation and coition, i.e. child-parent and spouse-spouse relationships. It appears to be a unique database on a global scale. My database is published at www.sejm-wielki.pl and www.wielcy.pl.
During the meeting, I would like to talk about what is not visible outside my websites, namely a) how the content posted there is created and b) how I use this database in my scientific research. I would most like to emphasise the second aspect: how we could work together to create something new, discovering something that has not yet been explored.
